It was not a day like any other when Dr. Fred Matiang’i landed at Ogande Girls to open the Ogande Library, Research and Innovation centre pioneered by Mama Ida Odinga.
Welcomed by Nyatiti dancers who were dressed in their traditional attires, they tuned the mood of the event as the Ogande Girls School scouts accorded the Chief Guest Dr. Fred Matiang’i a guard of honor.
At the landing area, Homabay Governor Cyprian Awiti alluded the sounds of the birds as similar sounds decades ago that meant the birds are now going to Kisii hills; this was before Kisii and Homabay had not been divided as counties.
‘Homabay, Kisii, Kisumu, Siaya, Nyamira and Migori are one block of Nyanza and we are proud of our son Dr. Fred Matiang’i who has always represented our region effectively. We shall support you our dear son.” Said the host Governor Cyprian Awiti (Akuba).
When Dr. Fred Matiang’i stood to speak, he acknowledged his close relationship with Prime Minister Raila Odinga, “My mentor Prime Minister Raila Odinga normally reminds me am his son. So I think I also belong to the sons and daughters of Mama Ida Odinga…” said Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
Speaker after speaker reminded the community of the need to work as a region despite being six counties. Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o gave a poetic presentation of the whole event as he thanked Mama Ida Odinga for playing a key role in educating the girl child, he also assured Dr. Fred Matiang’i for the support from the Council of Governors for the industrious work he is doing.
Homabay Town MP Peter Opondo Kaluma and Homabay County Women representative Gladys Wanga reminded the crowd that it was the good work of Dr. Fred Matiang’i while at the Ministry of Education that he reformed the education sector. They also hailed efforts by Mama Ida for fighting for the girl child empowerment.
“Today, we want to listen directly from the President of the Republic of Kenya through Dr. Fred Matiang’i. When Matiang’i is here, the President is here. Matiang’i is our son in this region and we are happy the work he is doing in the nation by representing our Nyanza region. Thank you for supporting our Ogande girls at this critical stage. We shall support you too.” Said Senator Moses Kajwang.
When he took to the stage, Prof. George Magoha committed ten million from the Ministry of Education to the project as Dr. Fred Matiang’i assured the public that he will present the Ogande Girls Project to the President for support and ensure its completed. Dr. Fred Matiang’i also gave a personal donation of one million and he gave full scholarship and sponsorship of a school girl that faced him asking for school fees. Dr. Matiang’i was moved by the tears of the girl.
