Kisii County Commissioner Stephen Kihara has dismissed reports that the much-hyped Kisii National Madaraka day celebration scheduled for 1st June 2020 has been canceled.

Addressing the media at His office on Wednesday Morning, the Commissioner said the celebrations will go on as planned, only the mass gathering celebration has been halted due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.

“I want to put it very clear, the National Celebration will be there. What was done is the methodology or style it will take to celebrate. The Ministry has put a mechanism for a virtual celebration of this year’s Madaraka Day,” He said.

In a statement from the office of the president sent to all media houses on Tuesday, interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho said the president will address the nation from the statehouse and not Kisii.

“The Ministry has put in place Mechanisms for a virtual celebration of this year’s Madaraka Day that will be streamed through all media houses and social media platforms. The celebration will run from 0800hrs and will culminate in the live address by His Excellency, the President from the statehouse, Nairobi,” Read the statement.

This year’s celebration was set to be held at Gusii stadium which its renovation is nearing completion. Roads, state lounge among others have been under renovation since March 2020.
