Kegati Market residents in Nyaribari chache, Kisii County  on Tuesday stormed one of the butcheries in the area and fished out rotten meat that was being sold to them.

Kisii County Health officers have been accused of laxity and allowing toxic meat in the market endangering the lives of many.

Speaking to the Daily Clock, the residents have protested fearing for their health following frequent cases of uninspected meat flooding the butcheries.

“We don’t know if they usually ferry this meat from homes to butcheries. We ask the Health officers to frequently keep a check on these butcheries,” Said Nelson Ondieki.

“The flies here are many than you can imagine. This meat is rotten. The health officers don’t inspect meat in butcheries and if they do they are bribed to allow toxic meat into the market,”

The incident emerges barely a month after they again stormed into a slaughterhouse at night and fished out a sick cow that was set for slaughter by a renowned butcher from the same area.

“We have been shocked to see many flies on the meat in a butcher we usually buy meat. Let the Kisii Government help us by closely inspecting and monitoring butchers in Kegati Market,” Said Erick a boda boda rider.
