There was Joy on Saturday evening in the streets of Kisii town after a 17 year old teenager agreed to undergo initiatory rite.
Johnson Abeka was among the four street children who were initiated. The program propelled by Steve Arika is aimed at protecting them from Diseases.
John said its a rite he has yearned for years due to peer pressure he has gone through from colleagues.
“Am happy that am now a man. We have been circumcised and we hope it will help us avoid diseases. Personally I thank Arika for coming to my rescue. I have been yearning for this but because I lack the ability have stayed for 17 years,” Said Johnson Abeka.
“I have undergone intimidation and separation from my colleagues. I believe after this I will also Join them as a full man. It’s a feeling I lack words to explain,” He added.
Arika told the media, the boys yearn for the rite but they lack means. A house, hospital bill and food are among their fears.
“They are many here but nobody cares. They are willing but fear where they will get food for the few days. I have decided to help them out by finding a house, food and pay hospital bill. The boys are good and obedient. They are on the streets because some are orphans among many other heartbreaking reasons,” Said Arika.
Arika further said he is running a program of training them how to ride motorbikes. They are taken to a driving school for a license.
Duke Ombati a former beneficiary, who grew in the streets told the media he offered to house the boys because of what he went through.
Ombati fled home years ago from his village at Egesa near Kisii town because of family difficulties. He has never been back despite being near until yesterday. His hut is still intact.
“I left home years ago because my family could not afford food. My home is near town but have never returned here. I decided to come back, use my hut though dilapidated to help my colleagues. It’s Steve who helped me. Am now a grown up and I depend on myself,” Said Ombati.
According to Ombati, Street life is challenging for they are neglected by many. They have been branded thieves.
“Nobody cares. Many of my colleagues have contracted diseases. Some have even died on my watch. Am no longer in that life. I usually spend all my time with them. Those are my closest brothers. I will use this to change their lives,” He added.
