Rwanda has assembled its first car known as Volkswagen. The car was built in a Rwandan industry situated in Capital Kigali.
The Polo model car is the very first car to be assembled by the industry as the Germany company is expected to assemble 5,000 cars in its first phase which will see through the additional of other models like Passat,Tiguan,Amarok and Teramont.
Volkswagan company Which is the largest in Europe has invested $20M in Rwanda which is expected to employ over 1000 workers.
Rwanda which has a population of 12M has close to 200,000 registered private cars which has been considered to be low.
Speaking during the launch of the car, Paul Kagame the president of Rwanda said he prefers home made machines as he says this is a new dawn to Rwanda.
“Rwanda cannot be a dump site for vehicles or clothes. Africa and Rwanda deserves sanity and this is one way to show that we have the ability” Said Kagame.
Apart from second hand clothes, Rwanda has been highly taxing imported vehicles since 2016 a move that will benefit Volkswagen company which is expected to assemble 5000 vehicles per year including Polo,Passat and Teramont Models.
However the cheapest car will cost $15,000 a clear indication that this will be expensive to most citizens in Rwanda.
