The future of a girl child is still worrying after rising cases of early pregnancy being reported in schools.
This comes after 9 teenagers were found to be pregnant in Matutu P.A.G Secondary school in Gesima Ward, Kitutu Masaba Constituency Nyamira County.
In Our dairy spot check on Monday 9 July 2018, to ascertain the truth, it was shocking to spot more than three girls with protruding stomachs walk towards the school kitchen to take their lunch meals.
Though the school principal, Mr. Charles Osoro at first declined to attend to the journalists, it took the intervention of the County Director for Education (CDE) Mr. Nelson Sifuna that he cooled down and though unwillingly, lay bare the information.
Osoro was demanding an introductory letter from the CDE claiming it was a directive from the Ministry of Education (M.o.E) due to the rising cases of students’ unrest in some parts of the Country.
Leter the Mr. Osoro confirmed to have had 9 cases of pregnancies spread across all classes in which 4 cases are in form one, 2 cases in form two, 2 cases in form three and 1case in form four
He said after conducting thorough investigations led by his female teachers, he noted that most of the pregnancies were conceived outside the school and during the end year holidays.
“I can confirm indeed we have had cases of teenage pregnancies in my school but after conducting my investigation, I realized that all of them happened outside the school and during the December holiday. All the girls are day scholars. Have not had any issues with boarders,” said Mr.Osoro.
The school with a population of 307 students has both boarders and day scholars, making it a challenge to monitor and control the girls.
Mr.Osoro blamed parents for poor upbringing of their children and failure to discipline them.
He also condemned the Boda Boda riders for preying on the innocent teens.
“We are having a problem with parents who don’t guide their girls on how to take life challenges. Another menace is the motorcycle riders who are causing more harm to our girls; they are seriously preying on the young and innocent girls and ruining their lives completely. Something needs to be done to tame this worrying trend”, he urged.
Two form ones have already delivered but not reported back to school.
In Riooga Secondary school the principal,Mr.Job Rasugu said he had 3 cases one in form one,one in form two and another in form three. He noted that the girls have recently joined his school while pregnant from their previous institutions. He said the law allows them to be in school with the state they are in ,then go home to deliver and come back to school and continue with their education.
“The law doesn’t condemn the girls and that’s why I had to allow them because if you deny them the basic education, they will sue you and the law will come for you”, he said.
The form two student has since given birth.
County women representative Jerusha Momanyi has warned those impregnating the minors to face the full wrath of the law.She has said in a phone interview with this reporter that she will form a committee to identify the culprits.
“We cannot have beasts in the name of men ruin the lives of young girls and have them go scot-free, am coming for them and the law is very clear”,she said.
